American singer-songwriter born Michael Bolotin on February 26, 1953, in New Haven, Connecticut. Began his career as a hard-rock vocalist with the bands Blackjack (1979-1980) and a solo career under his birth name before reinventing himself as an adult-contemporary balladeer in the late 1980s.

Released over a dozen studio albums. Commercial peak: Soul Provider (1989, featuring "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You") and Time, Love & Tenderness (1991, featuring "When a Man Loves a Woman"). Two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance. Has continued to record adult-contemporary, swing, and Italian-language albums.
