American heavy metal band formed in Auburn, New York in 1980 by bassist Joey DeMaio and guitarist Ross "the Boss" Friedman (later replaced by Karl Logan, 1994-2018). Vocalist Eric Adams has been the band's only continuous singer since formation. Distinguished by mythological/Conan-influenced lyrics, leather-and-loincloth stage attire, and extreme stage-volume performances.
Twelve studio albums starting with Battle Hymns (1982). Best-known releases include Into Glory Ride (1983), Kings of Metal (1988), and The Triumph of Steel (1992). The 1984 Guinness Book of World Records listed Manowar as the loudest band in the world (a title later contested by other acts).
