American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965. Long-running lineup centered on Arthur Lee (vocals/guitar, 1945-2006). Bryan MacLean (guitar/vocals, 1946-1998) contributed prominently to the early albums. Distinguished by their stylistic restlessness — folk-rock, psychedelia, garage rock, and orchestrated pop across their catalog.
Seven studio albums between Love (1966) and Reel to Real (1974). Critical peak: Forever Changes (1967), widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 1960s but commercially unsuccessful at the time. Lee was incarcerated 1996-2001 on a firearms conviction; reunited Love briefly thereafter. Died in 2006 of acute myeloid leukemia.
