American rock band formed in New York City in 1984. Long-running lineup: Corey Glover (vocals), Vernon Reid (guitar), Will Calhoun (drums), and Doug Wimbish (bass, since 1992, replacing Muzz Skillings). Distinguished by their virtuosic musicianship, genre-fusion (rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop), and a rare visibility as a Black rock band in the late-1980s and early-1990s alternative wave.
Six studio albums starting with Vivid (1988, featuring the breakthrough single "Cult of Personality"). Subsequent releases include Time's Up (1990) and Stain (1993). The band broke up in 1995 and reunited in 2000. Vernon Reid co-founded the Black Rock Coalition in 1985.
