American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1994 (originally as Burn the Priest, the name reverted-to in 2018 for a covers album). Long-running lineup: Randy Blythe (vocals), Mark Morton (guitar), Willie Adler (guitar), John Campbell (bass), and Chris Adler (drums, 1994-2019, replaced by Art Cruz).
Nine studio albums starting with New American Gospel (2000). Commercial peak: As the Palaces Burn (2003), Ashes of the Wake (2004), Sacrament (2006), and Wrath (2009). Considered foundational to the "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" alongside Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall. Blythe was charged with manslaughter in the Czech Republic in 2012 over a fan's death at a 2010 concert; he was eventually acquitted.
