Same artist as João Gilberto — variant character encoding. Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter born João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira on June 10, 1931, in Juazeiro, Bahia; died July 6, 2019. Architect of the bossa nova style and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Brazilian music.

Released the foundational Chega de Saudade (1959), establishing the gentle vocal phrasing and syncopated nylon-string guitar pattern that defined bossa nova. The Stan Getz collaboration Getz/Gilberto (1964) introduced bossa nova to a global audience and won the Grammy for Album of the Year (1965); the album includes "The Girl from Ipanema," sung by his then-wife Astrud Gilberto. Continued recording into the 2000s.
