American singer, songwriter, and guitarist born John Henry Ramistella on November 7, 1942, in New York City; raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Adopted the stage name on the advice of Alan Freed. Distinguished by his electrified covers of folk and R&B material, recorded live in many cases at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles.
Released over 25 studio albums. Best-known singles include "Memphis" (1964, a Chuck Berry cover), "Mountain of Love" (1964), "Secret Agent Man" (1966), "Poor Side of Town" (1966, his only #1), and "Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin')" (1977). Continues to perform.
