Johnny Cash's original backing duo: Luther Perkins (electric guitar, 1928-1968) and Marshall Grant (upright bass, 1928-2011). The trio recorded for Sun Records (1955-1958) and later Columbia (from 1958), establishing the spare "boom-chicka-boom" rhythm that defined Cash's early sound.
Key Sun Records sessions yielded "Cry! Cry! Cry!" (1955), "Folsom Prison Blues" (1955), "I Walk the Line" (1956), and "Big River" (1958). Perkins died in a house fire in 1968; the duo expanded to the Tennessee Three with the addition of drummer W.S. Holland in 1960 and continued with Bob Wootton replacing Perkins on guitar.
