Steppenwolf is a Canadian-American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1967 by German-born John Kay (vocals/guitar). The classic lineup included Michael Monarch (guitar), Goldy McJohn (keyboards, died 2017), Rushton Moreve (bass), and Jerry Edmonton (drums, died 1993).
Released 14 studio albums between Steppenwolf (1968) and Rise and Shine (1990). Commercial peak: "Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride" (1968), both prominently featured in the film Easy Rider (1969). The band dissolved in 1972, reformed multiple times through the 1980s, and Kay retired from touring in 2018.
