British film composer, conductor, and arranger born John Barry Prendergast on November 3, 1933, in York; died January 30, 2011. Best known for composing 11 James Bond film scores between Dr. No (1962, arranged) and The Living Daylights (1987), establishing the iconic "James Bond Theme" arrangement.

Won five Academy Awards: Born Free (1966, two awards), The Lion in Winter (1968), Out of Africa (1985), and Dances with Wolves (1990). Composed over 100 film and television scores. Awarded the OBE in 1999.
