British-American rock band formed in London in 1966 by guitarist Jimi Hendrix (American, b. November 27, 1942; d. September 18, 1970), bassist Noel Redding (British, b. 1945; d. 2003), and drummer Mitch Mitchell (British, b. 1946; d. 2008). Among the most influential rock bands of the 1960s, transforming the role of the electric guitar in popular music.
Three studio albums in two years: Are You Experienced (1967), Axis: Bold as Love (1967), and Electric Ladyland (1968). The group dissolved in mid-1969 amid tensions between Hendrix and Redding. Hendrix performed at Woodstock in August 1969 with the Gypsy Sun and Rainbows band, but a brief 1970 Experience reunion (with Billy Cox on bass) was cut short by Hendrix's death from barbiturate-related asphyxiation. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
