Jefferson Starship

American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1974, evolved from the earlier Jefferson Airplane. Long-running lineup centered on founding guitarist Paul Kantner (1974-1984, 1992-2016, died 2016), with various vocalists including Grace Slick, Marty Balin, and Mickey Thomas.

Active in three primary eras: rock-oriented 1974-1984 (Red Octopus, 1975; Spitfire, 1976), pop-oriented Starship (1985-1989, Knee Deep in the Hoopla, 1985), and the Kantner-led Jefferson Starship reunion (1992-2016). Eleven studio albums under the Jefferson Starship name. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 (as Jefferson Airplane).
