English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. One of the defining acts of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The longtime lineup of Harris, Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Dave Murray and Adrian Smith (guitars), Janick Gers (third guitar, since 1990), and Nicko McBrain (drums) has been remarkably stable since 1990.

The Bruce Dickinson-fronted 1980s run — The Number of the Beast (1982), Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), the live Live After Death (1985), Somewhere in Time (1986), and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988) — established the band as one of the genre's leading acts. Mascot Eddie has appeared on every album cover. Seventeen studio albums released through 2021's Senjutsu.
