American rock band formed in San Diego in 1966. Original lineup: Doug Ingle (vocals/keyboards, died 2024), Erik Brann (guitar, died 2003), Lee Dorman (bass, died 2012), and Ron Bushy (drums, died 2021). Often cited as one of the earliest heavy-metal-adjacent acts.
Five studio albums between Heavy (1968) and Sun and Steel (1975). Best-known release: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968), whose 17-minute title track filled the entire second side of the LP and became one of the most popular FM-radio cuts of the era. The band's various reformations have continued into the 2020s.
