American country singer-songwriter (1923-1953). Born in Mount Olive, Alabama. Widely considered one of the most influential figures in country music history — and one of the most influential American songwriters of the 20th century across all genres. His country-blues fusion influenced rock and roll's development.

Released dozens of singles during his short career (he died at age 29). Posthumous compilations have collected his vast output. Best-known songs include "Move It On Over" (1947), "Lovesick Blues" (1949), "Cold, Cold Heart" (1951), "Hey Good Lookin'" (1951), "Honky Tonk Blues" (1952), "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" (1952), and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (1949). Died from heart failure in the back of a Cadillac on New Year's Day 1953. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961.
