American rock band formed in East Bay, California in 1986. Original lineup: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals/guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass/vocals), and John Kiffmeyer (drums). Drummer Tré Cool replaced Kiffmeyer in 1990. Initially associated with the Berkeley Lookout! Records scene before signing to Reprise.
The major-label debut Dookie (1994) sold over 20 million copies worldwide and brought punk rock to mainstream radio. Their concept album American Idiot (2004) revitalized the band's commercial profile and spawned a Broadway musical. Fifteen studio albums total. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
