American rock band formed in Flint, Michigan in 1969. Original lineup: Mark Farner (vocals/guitar), Mel Schacher (bass), and Don Brewer (drums). Among the most commercially successful American rock bands of the early 1970s, with substantial controversy over critical disdain despite enormous album sales.
Released 13 studio albums starting with On Time (1969). Commercial peak: Closer to Home (1970), Survival (1971), Phoenix (1972), and We're an American Band (1973, their first #1 album). The band's 1971 Shea Stadium concert sold out faster than the Beatles' 1965 Shea Stadium show.
