American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1978. Lineup: Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar/keyboards), Jane Wiedlin (rhythm guitar/vocals), Kathy Valentine (bass, joined 1981), and Gina Schock (drums). The first all-female band who wrote and performed their own songs to reach #1 on the Billboard 200.
The debut Beauty and the Beat (1981) topped the US chart for six weeks. Subsequent releases: Vacation (1982), Talk Show (1984), and the reunion album God Bless the Go-Go's (2001). The band disbanded in 1985 and has reunited periodically since. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
