American country singer (1931-2013). Born in Saratoga, Texas. Among the most acclaimed and influential country vocalists in history, with a distinctive style that influenced subsequent generations of country singers. Often referred to as "the Possum" or "No Show Jones."

Released over 80 studio albums between 1957 and 2013. Critical peak: "He Stopped Loving Her Today" (1980), widely cited as one of the greatest country songs ever recorded. Other key releases include White Lightning (1959), Walls Can Fall (1992), and several duet albums with then-wife Tammy Wynette. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.
