American stand-up comedian (1937-2008). Born in The Bronx, New York. Among the most influential American comedians of the 20th century, known for his observational humor, political commentary, and use of language. His "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" routine led to the 1978 Supreme Court case FCC v. Pacifica Foundation.

Released 22 comedy albums and 14 HBO specials between 1960 and his 2008 death. Commercial peak: AM & FM (1972), Class Clown (1972, featuring the "Seven Words" routine), and the long-running series of HBO specials starting with On Location: George Carlin at USC (1977). Posthumously received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008.
