American post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1987. Lineup: Ian MacKaye (vocals/guitar, formerly of Minor Threat), Guy Picciotto (vocals/guitar), Joe Lally (bass), and Brendan Canty (drums). Distinguished by their fiercely independent business model — never charging more than $5-10 for a show, refusing major-label offers, releasing on their own Dischord Records.
Six studio albums between Repeater (1990) and The Argument (2001). Critical peak: Repeater, In on the Kill Taker (1993), and Red Medicine (1995). The band has been on indefinite hiatus since 2003. The 2003 Fugazi Live Series has released over 800 live recordings on Dischord, with proceeds going to the band.
