American rock band formed in Seattle in 1994 by Dave Grohl (vocals/guitar, formerly the drummer of Nirvana). Long-running lineup: Grohl, Nate Mendel (bass, 1995-present), Pat Smear (guitar, 1995-1997, 2010-present), Chris Shiflett (guitar, 1999-present), and the late Taylor Hawkins (drums, 1997-2022).
Eleven studio albums starting with the 1995 self-titled debut. Commercial peak: The Colour and the Shape (1997), There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999), and One by One (2002). Sixteen Grammy Awards. Hawkins died in March 2022; the band returned to touring with Josh Freese on drums and released But Here We Are (2023).
