English synth-pop duo formed in London in 1985 by Vince Clarke (synthesizers/songwriter, formerly of Depeche Mode and Yazoo) and Andy Bell (vocals). One of the longest-running and most consistent acts in the synth-pop genre.
Released over 20 studio albums starting with Wonderland (1986). Commercial peak: The Innocents (1988, featuring "A Little Respect" and "Chains of Love"), Wild! (1989), and Chorus (1991). The 1992 EP Abba-esque — covers of four ABBA songs — became their highest-charting UK release. Continues to record and tour into the 2020s.
