Italian composer and conductor (1928-2020). Born in Rome. Among the most prolific and influential film composers in history, with over 400 scores credited across film, television, and theater. Particularly known for the trumpet-and-whistle motifs of his work with director Sergio Leone.
Key scores include A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Cinema Paradiso (1988), The Untouchables (1987), and The Hateful Eight (2015) — the last finally winning him a competitive Academy Award after five previous nominations. Received an honorary Oscar in 2007.
