American singer-songwriter born April 2, 1947, in Birmingham, Alabama. First gained prominence as harmony vocalist with Gram Parsons before launching a solo career after his 1973 death. Bridged country, folk, rock, and bluegrass across her decades-long discography.

Released over 25 studio albums starting with Gliding Bird (1969) and the breakthrough Pieces of the Sky (1975). Subsequent peaks: Elite Hotel (1975), Wrecking Ball (1995, produced by Daniel Lanois), and the 1987 collaboration Trio with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Fourteen Grammy Awards. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
