American singer-songwriter (1969-2003). Born in Omaha, Nebraska. First gained prominence as a member of Heatmiser (1991-1996), then launched a successful solo career. Distinguished by his hushed vocal style, intricate fingerpicked acoustic arrangements, and lyrically frank treatment of depression and addiction.

Released six studio albums in his lifetime, between Roman Candle (1994) and Figure 8 (2000). The posthumous From a Basement on the Hill (2004) was assembled by collaborators from his unfinished sessions. Critical peak: Either/Or (1997) and XO (1998). Nominated for an Academy Award for "Miss Misery" from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack (1997). Died from two stab wounds to the chest in October 2003; the death has been variously ruled a suicide and a possible homicide.
