English rock band formed in Deptford, London in 1977. Lineup centered on Mark Knopfler (vocals/lead guitar). Other key members included his brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar, 1977-1980), John Illsley (bass), Pick Withers (drums, 1977-1982), and Alan Clark (keyboards, since 1980). Distinguished by Knopfler's fingerpicked Stratocaster technique and the band's blues-influenced rock approach.
Six studio albums between Dire Straits (1978) and On Every Street (1991). Commercial peak: Brothers in Arms (1985), which sold over 30 million copies worldwide on the strength of "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life." The band dissolved in 1995; Knopfler has pursued a successful solo career since. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
