American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1982 by vocalist Ronnie James Dio after his departure from Black Sabbath. Long-running lineup centered on Dio (until his death in 2010), guitarist Vivian Campbell (1982-1986), and drummer Vinny Appice (intermittently throughout the band's history).
Ten studio albums between Holy Diver (1983) and Master of the Moon (2004). Holy Diver and The Last in Line (1984) are the band's most celebrated releases. Dio died of stomach cancer in 2010; the band has been formally dissolved since.
