American alternative rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984. Original lineup: J Mascis (vocals/guitar), Lou Barlow (bass), and Murph (Patrick Murphy, drums). Foundational to the development of indie rock and an influence on the early-1990s alternative explosion.

The band's first three albums — Dinosaur (1985), You're Living All Over Me (1987), and Bug (1988) — defined the original sound. Barlow was fired in 1989 (he founded Sebadoh shortly after); the band continued as a Mascis-led vehicle through the 1990s. The original three reunited in 2005 and have released six additional albums together. Twelve studio albums total.
