English-American blues-rock supergroup formed in 1970 by Eric Clapton (vocals/guitar), Bobby Whitlock (vocals/keyboards), Carl Radle (bass, died 1980), and Jim Gordon (drums, died 2023). Guitarist Duane Allman (of the Allman Brothers Band) contributed extensively to the band's only studio album but was never an official member.
Released one studio album: the double LP Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). Best-known song: "Layla," written by Clapton about Pattie Boyd (then George Harrison's wife, later Clapton's). The band dissolved in 1971 after substance-abuse-related fractures and the death of Duane Allman in 1971.
