English hard rock band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Classic lineup: Joe Elliott (vocals), Steve Clark and Phil Collen (guitars), Rick Savage (bass), and Rick Allen (drums). Allen continued playing after losing his left arm in a 1984 car accident, using a custom electronic kit.
Producer Mutt Lange shaped their commercial peak: High 'n' Dry (1981), Pyromania (1983, 10 million US sales), Hysteria (1987, 12 million US sales). Steve Clark died in 1991 of an accidental overdose; Vivian Campbell joined in 1992. Twelve studio albums total. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
