English musician (1947-2016) widely considered one of the most influential artists in popular music history. Born David Robert Jones in Brixton, London; adopted the stage name Bowie in 1965 to avoid confusion with the Monkees' Davy Jones.

Released 27 studio albums between 1967 and 2016. Distinguished by persistent reinvention — Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, the Berlin Trilogy ambient phase, the Let's Dance (1983) commercial peak, the experimental late-period Outside (1995) and Earthling (1997). Final album Blackstar (2016) was released two days before his death from cancer. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
