American singer born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in Spring Gulley, South Carolina. Career-defining single "The Twist" (1960) launched a worldwide dance craze and has been the only single ever to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in two separate chart runs (1960 and 1962).
Released over 25 studio albums between Twist with Chubby Checker (1960) and Towards the Future (1985). Other notable singles include "Pony Time" (1961, #1), "Limbo Rock" (1962), and the Dee Dee Sharp duet "Slow Twistin'" (1962). Continues to perform live; Billboard magazine named "The Twist" the #1 song of the rock era for the 50-year period of 1956-2006.
