American hard rock supergroup formed in 1969 by Carmine Appice (drums) and Tim Bogert (bass) after the breakup of Vanilla Fudge. Original lineup also included Rusty Day (vocals) and Jim McCarty (guitar). Considered an early proto-metal act, with Bogert and Appice's rhythm section a major influence on subsequent hard-rock players.
Four studio albums in the original run: Cactus (1970), One Way... or Another (1971), Restrictions (1971), and 'Ot 'N' Sweaty (1972). Bogert and Appice departed in 1972 to form Beck, Bogert & Appice with Jeff Beck. Cactus has been periodically reformed in various configurations since 2006.
