American country band led by Buck Owens (1929-2006). Pioneer of the "Bakersfield sound" — a stripped-down, twangy honky-tonk approach in opposition to the polished Nashville sound. The Buckaroos backing band — particularly guitarist Don Rich (1941-1974) — was as identifiable to fans as Owens himself.
Released dozens of albums between Buck Owens (1961) and Hot Dog! (1988). Career peak: 21 #1 US country singles between 1963 and 1972. Co-hosted Hee Haw (1969-1986). Don Rich died in a motorcycle accident in 1974, a blow Owens described as devastating. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
