Polish extreme metal band formed in Gdańsk in 1991. Long-running lineup centered on Nergal (Adam Darski, vocals/guitar). The band's style evolved from black metal in the 1990s into a death metal-black metal hybrid by the late 2000s.
Twelve studio albums starting with Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) (1995). Commercial peak: Demigod (2004), The Apostasy (2007), and The Satanist (2014). Nergal survived leukemia in 2010; the subsequent album The Satanist was widely regarded as a creative peak following his recovery.
