American folk singer-songwriter born July 10, 1947, in Coney Island, New York. Son of Woody Guthrie. Distinguished by his story-song approach — the most famous example being the 18-minute "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" (1967), an anti-Vietnam-War talking-blues epic that became a Thanksgiving radio tradition.
Released over 20 studio albums starting with Alice's Restaurant (1967). Other key releases include Running Down the Road (1969), Hobo's Lullaby (1972, featuring his hit cover of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans"), and Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys (1973). Officially retired from touring in 2020 due to health issues.
