American jam band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1989 by Bruce Hampton (vocals/guitar, died 2017). The classic lineup included Jeff Sipe (drums), Oteil Burbridge (bass), Jimmy Herring (guitar), Matt Mundy (mandolin), and Count M'Butu (percussion). Considered foundational to the Southern jam-band scene that produced Widespread Panic, Phish, and others.
Three studio albums between Aquarium Rescue Unit (1992) and In a Perfect World (1994). Hampton died on stage at his 70th birthday concert in 2017, just minutes after performing. Surviving members went on to dozens of significant projects including the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Dead & Company, and Widespread Panic.
