Brazilian composer and pianist (1927-1994). Born in Rio de Janeiro. Among the most influential figures in 20th-century Brazilian music; widely credited as the primary composer in the development of bossa nova alongside lyricist Vinicius de Moraes and guitarist João Gilberto.
Released over 30 studio albums between The Composer of Desafinado, Plays (1963) and Antonio Brasileiro (1994). Best-known compositions include "The Girl from Ipanema," "Desafinado," "Corcovado," and "Wave" — all jazz and pop standards covered by hundreds of artists. The 1964 album Getz/Gilberto (with Stan Getz and João/Astrud Gilberto) won Album of the Year at the 1965 Grammy Awards.
