American thrash metal band formed in New York City in 1981. Long-running lineup centered on guitarist Scott Ian and drummer Charlie Benante. Primary vocalists have been Joey Belladonna (1984-1992, 2005-present) and John Bush (1992-2005).
One of the "Big Four" thrash bands alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Eleven studio albums including Spreading the Disease (1985), Among the Living (1987), State of Euphoria (1988), and Persistence of Time (1990). Notable 1991 single "Bring the Noise" (with Public Enemy) helped pioneer the rap-metal hybrid.
