American rock band formed in Seattle in 1987. Original lineup: Layne Staley (vocals, 1987-2002), Jerry Cantrell (guitar/vocals), Mike Starr (bass, 1987-1993), and Sean Kinney (drums). Often associated with the early-1990s grunge wave despite the band's heavier metal-influenced approach.

Their first three albums — Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992), and the self-titled third album (1995) — sold a combined 12 million-plus copies in the US. Staley died of an overdose in 2002. The band reunited in 2005 with vocalist William DuVall and has released three subsequent albums: Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013), and Rainier Fog (2018).
