American jazz drummer (1929-1996). Born in Marietta, Pennsylvania, raised in Boston. Among the most respected jazz drummer-educators of the 20th century; taught at Berklee College of Music from 1957 to 1974, where his students included Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and Terri Lyne Carrington.

Most prominently associated with the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1968-1974), replacing the long-tenured Joe Morello. Also performed and recorded with Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Lionel Hampton, among many others. Released several recordings as a leader; primarily known as a sideman and educator.
