American rock band formed in Boston in 1970. Original lineup: Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (lead guitar), Brad Whitford (rhythm guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), and Joey Kramer (drums). Initial commercial success came with Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976).
Substance abuse and lineup tension led to Perry's 1979 departure and a creative slump. The 1984 reunion of the original lineup and 1986 collaboration with Run-DMC on "Walk This Way" launched a sustained late-career renaissance: Permanent Vacation (1987), Pump (1989), and Get a Grip (1993) all sold multi-platinum. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Steven Tyler's 2024 vocal injury led to the band's retirement from touring.
